Nursery & Primary Teachers Training
Established in 2015, the Nursery and Primary Teacher Training (NPTT) program is a one-year certification program that trains future teachers in the use of activity-based learning and child-responsive pedagogy. It also inculcates the same ethic of care that serves as the foundation of SHEF’s philosophy. In order to support the integration of theoretical knowledge presented in class, students spend 60% of their time in SHEF classrooms as teacher assistants. Though the course is open to anyone, it actively recruits homemakers, women who left their job in order to fill the role of primary caregiver to their children, and women who, for any reason, were forced to put their own aspirations on hold. As such, the NPTT program also conducts critical dialogues with students to help them understand how their lives have been impacted by gender and patriarchy, and build their sense of agency in their own lives. In this way, the program builds their confidence in order to facilitate their entry, or re-entry, into the workforce.
